everything on this year's list was predictable, but still slightly mortifying. because unfortunately the way i listen to music is that i pick out a song and then loop it until my ears bleed. i don't stream though because i can't be fucked, which actually might make the numbers i still hit worse. these are 100% organic ash listening habits. 2021 was much better than 2020, however, where i only had six songs total that weren't kpop, and two of those six were pieces i was playing in band. anyways, here are some stats:
top 10 songs:
my top track was PANORAMA to absolutely no one's surprise. i listened to it for a jaw-dropping 2,682 times. two versions of fiesta being up there is predictable, but awful. did not expect blinding lights to be that high up though. finally, ANDA... i miss her so bad please let her out of the dungeon yg </3
top 5 artists:
fun fact i have a tweet from a few months ago that predicted this exact list in this exact order. anyways i got in the top 0.05% of iz*one listeners with 16,508 minutes this year, a jump up from 0.1% last year and 7,792 minutes. um. yeah. it is like they disbanded less than halfway through the year + didn't have any proper comebacks this year, so there are probably less listeners to compete with for top listeners. but yet the fact that they are Gone and i got more time... oh dear. and exo when they had one mini-album with zero promotion. yeah. shout-out to me for being the most fucked-up wizone exo-l there is <3
bottom 10 songs:
re: fucked up exo-l isms. as for inception, this one is kind of funny because i only started listening to it because iKON covered it on kingdom. and it grew on me. and then i went to loop for it on spotify and Didn't Find It so settled for this one instead. anyways i still do prefer iKON's cover... but i think i worked out to this for a period of time because it is so close to 3:31 seconds and i like using my music as a timer. everything else i think makes sense... female soloist supremacy <3 and oneus my token 4th gen bg that makes good music and never gets brought onto my tl and whose fandom i have zero involvement in. thank god.
oddballs:
Empathy - D.O. — this is the only album to have all of its songs make it onto the top 100, including alternate versions songs. let's go dandanies... empathy the perfect comfort album i adore kyungsoo. though exo's universe album came very close; it's only missing universe and universe - chinese version. i even have the cd version on there.
Thumbnail - Louie Zong, Brian David Gilbert — bdg is so fun to me okay sometimes you just really need to get into a stupid silly fun youtuber that makes weird and sometimes extremely unsettling and often very ingenious content and has a cult following... for self-care. none of the others songs on the entire playlist are like this though. i think i studied to it.
Almost Idyllic - Sleeping At Last — feels like a major throwback to middle school / freshman year ash. i literally did not listen to this song this year, except for one night where i fell asleep by accident after rehearsal with it playing at like 9pm. and woke up at like 4 am. and so it is here.
16 Shots - Stefflon Don — if chaeyeon did not cover this for studio choom this would not be here at all. but as it stands i really actually like just listening to the music people dance to for fun... i have a whole new playlist that's just various stuff that was played on street woman fighter (which, side-bar, i am mildly obsessed with like i'm so happy swf went viral in korea it is definitely one of mnet's better shows) anyways yeah i wouldn't go out of my way to listen to it normally but Dance Music bypass.
Candy Store - Heathers the Musical — this is the only musical track on here but it is so good. i don't remember if i've ever talked about it here but i fucking love heathers it is so delightfully melodramatic and awful. like those fics that are just balls-to-the-walls insane and go fucking ham with the angst. massive slow-burn. the love interests break up three times before finally properly dating. what finally drives them together is some huge scandal and / or life-threatening circumstances. you know what i'm talking about.
Downtown - Macklemore — um this song is just FUN. obsessed with "there's layers to this shit player, tiramisu, tiramisu // let my coattail drag but i ain't tearing my suit, tearing my suit" <3
top 4 podcasts:
number five is a podcast that my friends run because i am supportive and cool like that <3 unfortunately it would also be very doxxing to reveal it so you will just have to trust me on this. anyways 2021 was the year i finally properly got into all the podcasts that my friends have been recommending me for years, and you can kind of tell that there is a Type that i listen to. i thought it was funny at first how tma is second considering i'm only 8 episodes into the first season. but then i realized that death by dying, despite being the only one on this list i've finished, is currently only one second with five episodes, and i'm even less far into penumbra. and also i listened to tma when i was deep cleaning my fridge when i had a terrible mold problem.
anyways if that did not tip you off, out of these four i have mostly been focusing on wtnv when listening. it is just a very nice comfort podcast i think... good for washing dishes to. it is formulaic, but in a nice way, and also still has some Banger Lines. though all of these have good lines oh man if i did not have self-control then i would just ruin the timelines of my mutuals with podcast bot retweets.
total minutes listened:
97,762 - i think this is good proof that i am the type of person that always needs to be listening to something, or else i go crazy. in general regards to my list, i think that my shift towards listening to less kpop in general, like no longer following every single release of a billion groups, has led to more genre variety overall... but also much higher concentration in the few artists that i did keep around. i am, in fact, looking forward to next year <3 i wonder if i can be fucked up enough to get iz*one to the top again <3
