kingdom is funky because i've actually stanned / at least had passing interest in all of these groups before / currently, so? i really don't have much investment in who actually wins. or at least i can pretend... i do still have some skz ultisms left in me but it's not as bad as, say, rtk where i was mostly gunning for golcha (rip) and oneus. anyways these are some of my thoughts about the two rounds of performances so far, per group!

the boyz:
the stealer - pretty fucking solid! i really like this song, it's probably what sold me on tbz after all of my rtk induced irrational bitterness towards them LOL though it's to the point where i kind of wished they saved it for a full performance instead of just the intro? more on this later though. i like the epic thing they always do with more traditional instruments (piano, violin, etc.) it's a nice touch and also i fucking love sunwoo so the fact that he always features so heavily in their performances pleases me greatly. wish they'd like, kept the second phrase in the chorus, like the korean after "i'm the stealer," i liked that part a lot and missed it in the version they did. choreo was pretty insane i love their more contemporary style. overall very good performance especially on its own, tbz are old pros at this after all of rtk, do kind of prefer some of the original song more though.

no air - going back to what i said about saving the stealer! it is both impressive and jarring to me how... the boyz make their songs sound so epic when most of their tt's are Not Epic sounding. like reveal and now no air? impressive because imo they're at a slight disadvantage compared to a group like, say, atz who have a very grand and adventurous concept. but like... jarring because idk cognitive dissonance or something.

as for the actual performance though it was also solid! liked the concept a lot, as someone who is always elementalfucker69. they have some fun tricks like sunwoo falling down the hole! and the arms behind the sheet! the arms... felt like an off-brand i&s naughty but oh well. it was just very solid but like. hm tbz being mnet rtk veterans is both a curse and a blessing because this is a very solid performance but doesn't feel... too different from their previous stages. is that just me am i just struck with boy group jaded-isms </3

ateez:
wave - i am straight up going to say that this was a weird song choice. the hakuna matata? i think they mostly make it work but once again the cognitive dissonance... they performed well though! i do think that they took a little too long to get into it, felt like when they ended i wanted more. like it felt very abrupt. once again I LOVE THE STRINGS. i miss mingi my boy i hope he is doing well </3 like the fire. not much else to say? atz are always solid performers. all the groups are.

wonderland - THEY SAMPLED DVOƘÁK SYMPHONY No. 9 LET'S A FUCKING GOOOO orchestra snob in me is immediately pleased. the fact that it's called the new world symphony and they had a pirate concept... buzzfeed unsolved. hope they do well just because of that tbh because last time a group i favored sampled a piece of classical music they were eliminated and i am still salty (fuck you mnet joochan did not learn paganini to be treated like this golcha were robbed holy fuck).

that aside YEAH this slammed! love the arrangement, fits the concept really well, and the incorporation of the symphony is done really well too.  i once again miss mingi and his rap part but i love contortionism so like half-win? ALSO THERE'S A KRAKEN sorry for be monsterluvr666 here but THERE'S A KRAKEN THAT'S SICK. also think they used the stage very cleverly with the different levels and whatnot. jongho's note... god i sound so mean i must preface this by saying that i fucking love the dude but. he sounds a little like he's in pain. a little strained. a little screechy? kind of just flashy? i feel like kpop twitter is making a bigger deal of it than it is but i'm no vocalist so i will simply sit here. for the last chorus i wish they'd maybe saved the symphony sampling for there but maybe i'm just really biased. still good as hell though.

ikon:
rhythm ta - ikon is one of those weird groups where i love their music but. cannot get fully invested. i have an inherent distrust of all groups that come out of yg on principle because honest to god that company as a whole is problematic as fuck, but damn do they make bangers. anyways this was a very... yg performance if that makes sense? like very laid-back (bobby not even bothering to lipsync and grinning like a maniac the entire time) and like. god i hate using this term but swaggy. you know, yg. i don't think they deserved to be last but also i don't know who i would put last so i guess it had to be someone? they used the bridge part which is the best fucking part though very happy about that except they cut the vibraslap i want the vibraslap back. other than that the arrangement is really nice actually like it just as much if not more than the original.

love scenario / killing me - love these two songs thank god. transition was a little sudden but once again I Love These Songs so i don't care as much as i could. it was a good choice on their (and also sf9 chani's) part to use killing me because while love scenario is their big hit, it just... wouldn't work as well next to all the other intense stages for the voting public i think? wouldn't have as much punch in comparison (which is kind of a shame because i do quite like those concepts). the musical concept is so fun i have a soft spot for trenchcoats and this hits it.

as for killing me THIS SONG ESPECIALLY i love it. wanted a little more out of it actually. the scene where the lighter gets thrown and sets it on fire Very Ash Pandering. once again this is a very yg performance, like at the end where they don't dance at the beginning of the final chorus and instead just kind of vibe... big bang and blackpink do this too it's like. too cool to even try. though they try more here, i think the sixth place shocked them a little but, yeah, would love to see how the yg energy persists throughout the rest of the performances.

sf9:
good guy - fucking love this song too, suits concept is sexy as hell. don't think this performance was super memorable though, it was just... fine. it did the job. again i think like ateez it just took too long to get into things? too long of an intro imo. wish they'd performed more of the song instead of having a really long dance break. also don't think that sf9 have the most ideal discography for kingdom? feel like it's a bit suave and smooth as opposed to the intensity that some of the other groups (once again, atz) have.

jealous - apparently this got no votes in the first round or something? idk but that is straight robbery this fucking slams. i love the fairytale-esque energy of this with the snow white / mirror mirror storyline. i also think it's lovely how they just straight up owned the fact that everyone thought they were saying jealous in the original song when i'm pretty sure it's never actually a lyric (the song's called now or never and they're actually saying jilleosseo, i did it). not sure if it was always meant to sound like jealous in the original song but funky addition here.

anyways the storytelling here is lovely with the mirror work and so on. the ending was so cool? They Deserved So Much Better wtf. love the arrangement with the strings and the progression of the song, i guess what might've done them in was the fact that the chorus is like a fake-out drop??? even though that was sick as fuck but. whatever. sf9 are also i think one of the groups with the least established fanbases from what i can tell? a shame. anyways, fuck you mnet, this hit hard.

btob:
beautiful pain - i am a bit worried that btob are going to be the park bom to kingdom in that they are a group from an older generation that are heavily debilitated by the loss of several members. like they are still killing it but? there's just a disconnect from this gen of kpop and the newer ones sometimes and i think the rankings so far are showing it. it kind of sucks, hopefully they get treated better than bom </3 anyways solid showing just felt out of place with the other groups though that is Not their fault at all it's just. the energy.

missing you - I AM SEASONFUCKER69 loving it here. the swords are a nice touch i think, legit enough to not bother me (more on this later). the arrangement with the more traditional instruments is my bread and butter (see: oneus's lit rtk performance) loved that shit. the fighting was also very exciting i didn't expect it for some reason (see: park bom comparision) but YEAH it was cool! the transition in and out of it was a little sudden but you know. it's fine i think the fight scene was to cater to one group of people and then the chorus is like the more btob trademark? anyways. solid shit it's just that this gen prioritized dancing and rapping a lot more i think so a little out of place? once again though NOT THEIR FAULT.

stray kids:
miroh - me: i don't really have any investment in who wins. also me: stray kids... han jisung my king... anyways yeah some bias might slip through here but. i do see how this won i think they used the most props and i think their intro was one of the most interesting? miroh was a good choice. the green pearl lights were sick. the fake knives were a bit tacky honestly, though. i'm generally not a big fan of small flimsy / fake props like that. (i liked the swords in btob though! and the spears in the victory song stage they performed at mama. those were nice. i think it's just that they look so tiny and i Know they're fake. nitpicking here though). the sparkler is a very nice touch wish they'd kept it around for longer but i understand that they probably had to move on and it's hard to coordinate that shit. side note love how much of a loud bitch wooyoung is whenever changbin does anything they're so fun. anyways cool shit. not sure about the hand scratch tattoos also kinda tacky but Cool Shit.

side effects / god's menu - first of all YEAH THEY DID SIDE EFFECTS i had a dw draft about taking kpop too seriously (that i deleted because. got too rant-y and rambling even for me) and in it i talked about how kpop twt gives this song WAY too much shit it actually fucks so hard. and i thought that they wouldn't actually perform it because the god's menu in the teaser fooled me but then they DID i was so pleased. the concept is so good here i love the music during minho and jisung's intro. and the hands and felix? excellent. i love this creepy shit.

it's a little weird how they transition to god's menu but like. i get the choice i think? idk when i was considering why side effects wouldn't be chosen most of my reasoning came from 1) not their most popular song and 2) it's a competition about kings i don't think they'd go for such a self-deprecating song? so god's menu is like. beloved and also very YEAH GO US. though the chef concept still throws me off man even in the original song i was like. this is such a goofy and ridiculous concept. they are talking about chefs and cooking. oh my god only stray kids. that's the biggest drawback to this performance i think... you can't make being a chef emo (well you could but you'd need to focus a lot more about the knives and not the tang and flaming hot menus i think). shoutout though to the irony in bangchang singing "because we're one of a kind" while like a double hangs below him, mirroring his actions, as well as the minor twist on that line. the prospecting english major in me does enjoy that. if you ignore the lyrics this fucks hard (han jisung my Boy). not sure what the storyline is supposed to be? what goes on with the red harness things? idk though it was still just very grand very stray kids. imo the parts are more than their sum in this case but it's still a banger.

misc / final thoughts:
why do all of these groups do the exact same dance break in all their intro stages (and honestly like the award shows too) yes you have a sharp knife-like dance yes you can be in sync cool cool cool i want MORE. points to tbz for the contemporary style they threw in at the end. someone should get really into ballet i think. put on the tights don't be shy. i also think that in this initial stage the groups with more members had a leg up on the groups with less because this is the one time where there aren't any other dancers to fill space?

one thing that is Really noticeable is the difference between rtk and kingdom is that like. you can notice the step up. mnet is giving them (or, well, three of them because fucking hell mnet you snake how did you fuck up that badly as to not communicate a higher spending limit to Three of your groups. i feel like it's the three older ones too i feel like that would make sense considering the different calibers of the z trinity [tbz skz atz] with underwater filming and whatnot and the older ones [sf9 btob ikon]) a bigger production budget and the companies have the money to actually fulfill the budgets. the filmed reactions are also different? like idk i think you can tell these aren't rookies. they have... both more and less to prove somehow.

i still miss mingi. and also hyunjin </3 boy deserves better.

curious about what stages are left! wondering if they're going with the same rounds as queendom or if they're switching it up a little?

also a little curious how monsta x would've done if they had accepted their invitation. like don't get me wrong i'm glad as fuck that they are not in the show i'm glad they don't have to deal with mnet's bullshit. but i think they have the songs for it (shoot out, alligator, follow, etc). i think they would be one of the most well-rounded groups vocal, dance, and rap wise. and they're damn good performers. want to see how they would keep up with the kids lmao (joke). actually the two different cases of kingdom groups using sheets (tbz and skz) reminded me of mx's mama 2018 shoot out stage. good shit. once again though happy they escaped mnet's slimy little hands.

still a little [clenches teeth] at how the groups with different concepts are going to work out. feel like the flashy, epic, intense, go fucking ham concept is meta here which just so happens to work best for the z trinity (aka the three newest groups. more so skz and atz honestly but tbz just arrange the shit out of their songs and it works enough) and while i would like to see more variety i feel like that would also garner less success? it's a damn shame but it's also mnet. i am a produce stan and also queendom rtk viewer i did not expect anything different.

nonetheless, i am a lot more invested that i originally thought i would be LOL unfortunately i am returning back to my bg stan days with this...  alas. hopefully i don't end up as fucking salty as i did after rtk fingers crossed.

OHH i forgot to mention the levels on atz stage in my thread but i agree i rlly liked that too!!! contortionist part was fun too!! jongho's high note... if i speak...

agree w knives being kinda tacky for miroh altho i do appreciate how truly deranged lee know looks when he pretends to stab himself... the bit w/ i.n dragging the knife out from behind his hand at the end was kinda weird tho ngl. does kpoptwt really hate side effects that much bc i honestly truly believe it's super cleverly produced (altho maybe i just like psytrance LOL) and i love that one rearrangement of it from that one awards show n i feel like they rearranged it kinda similarly and/or reused parts of it for this perf. actually i did not like the minor twist on chan's line LOL i think it just added to the general feeling of 'why are they trying to make a song abt cooking emo...' i was having

agree that theres def an interesting dichotomy btwn the z groups n the older groups... esp when u have btob... i am so sorry but absolutely no one on this show is going to be able to do justice to eunkwang's parts but i think u have heard me rant enough on 4th gen declining vocals so i will save it

HEY ASH IS ANYA! i was going to reply to this just on twt but then realized there was a slight chance i would get shot down. BUT THESE TAKES ARE GOOD I AGREE VERY MUCH!!!!!! esp the stylistic gaps btwn the gens bc the genzs focus on storyline and fancy makeup and kinda more theatrical elements while the older gens are j. yk performing as they should!!! it's really just a matter of how the industry's aligned rn but with the younger gen grps now it's a lot ab concept more than j flat out singing/rapping

speaking of which the jongho high note :] i've taken choir for like ten years and been a sop1 since i was nine? so idk if that counts as qualification but personal opinion yea that was a little screechy at the end but jongho does this thing where he belts. everything which makes him a little flat sometimes when he goes high but also since he was performing i think he was tense and u really cannot hit notes like that if youre tight but i think he could actually do it if he j relaxed more and i forgot if he took a breath but if he didn't? he shld def take one a note or two before that high one so he can transition up there easier rather than that really long belt bc belts are so strong it's hard to change pitch. that is my little tangent on kpop vocalisms jongho is VERY GOOD THOUGH love him

i am a tbzfucker so i have been kind of too scared to watch the actual show i just stream the perfs bc seeing tbz disappointed is hard for me. but i did watch the atz perf for second round aswell and i kinda get why they got third for fire&ice? i didn't watch the skz but they are good performers i just hope they didn't do the felix deep voice horrendous rap thing (daenerys flashbacks). the juyeonsolo was fucking cool but idk. it was still good but compared to their rtk stages i think it's relying too much on stunts/props for the concept whereas in rtk they had sick ass choreo matching their concepts which was what i thought made their stages so dope. but that also might be bc they have to perform their own songs and with rtk they had more creative mobility w the range of songs they could choose? just overall tbh so far i way prefer rtk stages they were so fun and a lot were bright and upbeat everything in kingdom is so dark and dramatic and blah. no perf will ever match the amount of joy i feel watching the heroine collab stage. ah fuck i just want them to do bloom bloom so bad esp with the level of makeup they're doing right now???? GOD FUCK this is their one chance pls tbz pls

i am essentially relying on [profile] babyboybaek on youtube for rtk updates i refuse to watch the actual show mnet survival shows are so fucking sick i hate watching disappointment it hurts

THANK YOU FOR UR TAKES ASH DARLING!
